Federally Funded Research Studies on Rx Effectiveness

In the past few months, several prestigious medical journals have published the findings of a series of federally-funded, largest-of-their-kind studies on the effectiveness of certain mental health medications for the treatment of mental illnesses. Each study is being released in a series of phases. These National Institute of Mental Health-backed studies include:

The findings of CATIE, STAR*D and STEP-BD will ultimately help consumers and clinicians make more informed choices about which treatment is best for each individual and his/her unique characteristics and needs. Unfortunately, this research, if misinterpreted and misapplied, could spur states and other health care payors to restrict access to many needed treatments for people with mental illnesses.

To help improve understanding of the study findings and their potential implications, Mental Health America has created educational materials on each respective study. Mental Health America and its nationwide network of affiliates also continue to educate state decision makers, health care payors, providers and the public on these landmark studies.
