Mental disorders in children are just as
real, common and treatable as they are in adults. Left untreated,
children's
mental health
disorders can lead to problems at home, trouble in school
and in the community, substance abuse and even suicide. In
fact,
depression alone affects as many as one in every 33 children
and one in eight teens.
For eight years, Childhood Depression Awareness Day (CDAD)
has offered MHAs, our partners, like-minded organizations
and child advocates an opportunity to come together to focus
on childhood depression and other disorders. This special
section offers free materials designed to target parents
and caregivers. Use these fact sheets and tips to help raise
awareness of childhood depression, and other issues in kids
and teens, including bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders
and ADHD.
On May 9, ask a child or teen "What's the Matter?" — the
theme for the CDAD observance. Proudly wear a green ribbon
to draw attention to childhood depression, and use the
materials listed to the right to raise awareness about
the many mental health problems affecting our nation’s
children.
