Bipolar - Do You Know It?

Maurice Benard

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder causes a person’s mood to swing from excessively "high" and/or irritable to sad and hopeless, with periods of a normal mood in between. Mental Health America, the country’s oldest and largest mental health advocacy group, launched a nationwide public service announcement campaign to raise awareness about this condition, titled, "Bipolar Disorder: Do You Know It?"

Mental Health America’s goal for the campaign was to empower patients, families and friends to recognize the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder and to encourage them to seek information, as well as an accurate diagnosis and treatment for the illness.

The campaign included print, radio and TV spots distributed nationally and through local affiliate chapters. By educating Americans about the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder and encouraging accurate diagnosis and treatment, Mental Health America hoped to demonstrate that bipolar disorder is a highly treatable and manageable illness.
